Rittners School Of Floral Design
In Boston Presents....

Wired Water Design #10

Isn't this one marvelously different?

Yes it is a design in water, but certainly nothing like the round or oval designs emerging from a nest of foliage created in Grandpa's day, and so popular again today.

The organizing feature of this design, again, is wire, but not like any of the previously presented wired water designs.

This is certainly not Grandpa's design in water media! This is 21st Century water media!

What You Will Need

  • Glass container
  • Five carnations
  • Bear grass
  • 28 gauge bullion wire

  • This is a fairly easy design to construct, but it has visual complexity. Start off by taking a tall straight carnation. Surround it with some bear grass, allowing the bear grass to exceed the height of the carnation. Tie the bear grass to the carnation using 28 gauge bullion wire. Notice however, that in binding the bear grass to the carnation we are making little decorative loops of wire as well. The wire becomes aesthetically part of the composition, even as it is quite functional. Deliberately allow the bear grass to puff out towards the bottom of the stem. Bind it in place. Add a few shorter carnations towards the bottom of the design. Add a few more little loops for additional counterpoint and interest.

Here is a close up shot of the bottom of this design!

Notice the intricate detail of the wire and the stemming.

In these kinds of compositions, what is going on inside of the water media is often just as interesting as what is emerging.
