How To Make
An Easter Novelty Vase Arrangement

This is a very easy vase arrangement to make, and it is a lot of fun. We call these kind of designs "novelty arrangements." The concept of a novelty design, is that it is not a "serious" work of art, but rather a fun and whimsical floral representation of something. We have made all kinds of novelties ranging from sodas made of flowers to little dogs made from flowers. In this design we have a rather happy little Easter Bunny who is just sitting there telling us "hello"

What You Will Need

  • Container
  • 1/2 block of foam
  • Miniature carnations
  • Filler flower
  • Baker fern
  • Pipecleaners
  • Misc. materials for hat

  • The bunny is a very potent symbol for Easter. If you consider it, Easter commemorates the resurrection. It is symbolic of renewed life. Even prior to Christianity, a holiday symbolic of the renewal of the world after a long cold winter was popularly observed...

It should come as no wonder, then, that bunnies or rabbits, who certainly are associated with fertility and reproduction, would become a popular symbol of a holiday associated with renewal and regeneration.....

Well as is typical in floral designing, we can make just about anything out of flowers....In this case a cute Easter bunny....

How was she constructed? Very easy.........

Foam is first placed into the container

A cushion of baker fern and filler flower is placed around the edge of the container.

Carnations are made into an oval mound, piled up next to each other to form the body....

Half a dozen carnations are held together in the hand, and tied with wire. The stems are cut so that this round cluster can be inserted into the oval mound, but are suspended a little higher than the body of the bunny. This forms the head....

Eyes, ears, whiskers, and feet are formed with pipecleaners. A single miniature carnation forms the nose....

As for the hat .......We took the cardboard remains of the top of a bolt of ribbon (shaped like a doughnut), and glued to it a half a sphere of styrofoam (painted). A little flower is fashioned from pipecleaners and attached to the hat. A small bow of ribbon is placed on one side of the hat, and a maline bow in the back......This is glued on to the bunny...

We could consider the design completely finished at this point.....

On the other hand, we can build a larger design around this novelty......

Notice the use of the filler material around the bunny and up higher behind the bunny.......

Next, start adding some miniature carnations to mirror the filler materials.

We continue adding our miniature carnations around the happy bunny, so that she is surrounded by minis and filler......

The completed design becomes much larger with the addition of the miniature carnations and the filler materials.....The bunny looks quite comfortable serving as the focal point of a fun and easy holiday arrangement
